Google streaming I/O conference 2011 live for those who can't make it

Google I/O 2011
The Google I/O conference, a gathering of developers from across the globe to San Francisco's Moscone Center, sold out in under an hour. In an effort to encompass as many people as clearly want to join in with the conference, Google is going to stream the keynotes, sessions and Developer Sandbox, live via the Google I/O website. This is in addition to the already planned I/O Extended viewing parties that Google and others are hosting around the world.

So if were unlucky in getting tickets, stuck at home, or to your desk on May 10th and 11th, but really want to get in on the I/O action, check out the Google I/O Live page, where you can register your interest by displaying the Google I/O Live 2011 HTML5 badge on your site. Oh and check out the fancy, bouncing ball, countdown clock while you're there too.

Going, going, gone: tech giants approved to bid on Nortel patents

Apple has received the green light to bid on Nortel's patent portfolio after having been reviewed for any anticompetitive conflicts. This adds Apple to the group of Department of Justice-approved bidders, which also includes Google and Intel. The companies will begin bidding on the highly valued patents beginning next Monday.

It came out late last year that Apple and Google were among the companies expected to bid on the bankrupt Canadian telecom's patents—specifically those that relate to 3G and 4G wireless technology, including Long Term Evolution (LTE). Last month, however, both companies found themselves being reviewed by the US Department of Justice to ensure winning bids wouldn't spark anticompetitive actions, especially since Apple has a recent history of "[asserting] intellectual property rights against other companies."

Now, however, the Federal Trade Commission has given Apple the green light, as noted by the Wall Street Journal, with Google receiving approval last week. In addition to Apple and Google, Intel was also given the go-ahead by the FTC on Friday, and Ericsson AB is said to be in on the action as well. Reuters claims that RPX Corp., a "patent risk mitigation services" company, is also planning to make a bid, while Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE has shown an interest in bidding on the LTE portions of the portfolio. RIM has also long been known as a potential bidder, but analysts seem to think the company will be outbid by the likes of Apple and Google early on.

Google already made an opening bid of $900 million earlier this year, so the others will have to step up if they want the patents for themselves. And step up they undoubtedly will, but for how much? "You need to add in a fear premium from most of the people you hear that are attached to this auction," an unnamed source told Reuters. "I think for certain people it would be a bad thing if other people got their hands on these patents."

Lawsuit: Sony laid off security staff, unprepared for PS3 hacks

A new class-action lawsuit has been filed against Sony that claims the company has been negligent with online security, leading to multiple hostile attacks and the loss of customers' private data. The suit claims that personal information—including credit card numbers and expiration dates—were taken from Sony's servers, and cites a number of confidential witnesses who claimed Sony's security was inadequate. Perhaps most damning is the claim that Sony laid off employees working in security before the attacks.

"Sony was more concerned about their development server being hacked rather than some consumer's data being stolen," according to a confidential witness quoted in the complaint. "They want to protect themselves and not the people that use their servers."

Moom for Mac simplifies window moving and zooming

Moom for Mac

Moom
is a Mac utility that aims to simplify the task of moving and sizing windows. Moom can run in three different modes, seen in the image above. The Standard mode will make Moom have a Dock icon as well as menu items in the menu bar. In Menu Bar mode, Moom will only show up in your menu bar, and in the Faceless mode you won't see any sign of its existence at all -- unless you hover over the green zoom button in any window, which is when Moom starts working its magic.

Moom has two ways in which it can be operated -- by using the mouse or the keyboard. Using the mouse, after you've hovered over the aforementioned green zoom icon, a Moom menu will pop-up (above left). From there you can select if you want the current window zoomed to full screen, or if it should only occupy the left or right half of the screen, or even the top or bottom half if you're feeling saucy. The arrow-like icon allows you to revert the window to its original position.

But wait, there's more! If you drag the width/height icons a few pixels instead of just clicking on them, they're transformed into even more options, allowing you to zoom the current window to a(ny) quarter of the screen. How exactly does this work? To make the window occupy the top left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon up, and to assign it to the bottom left quarter, you drag the 'left half' icon down.

Keyboard mode lets you control Moom with a global hotkey and the arrow buttons. You can set any key combination to be your global Moom hotkey, and set any subsequent key press to do any action that Moom can accomplish. Using the keyboard also gives you the option of centering a window, something which can't yet be done with the mouse. Hit the jump for a screenshot of the entire keyboard shortcut configuration menu to admire the amazing number of ways in which you can customize your interactions with Moom. Last, but definitely not least, you can rest assured knowing that Moom does support multiple displays.

Moom works for 100 uses in its free demo mode, after which you can purchase it either directly from Many Tricks (the developer), or from the Mac App Store. The license costs $5.

NASA lander prototype ditches the manpower for an autonomous flight (video)

Hear that? Those were the giddy giggles of some very happy scientists down at NASA's Alabama-based Marshall Space Flight Center. Besting its previous June record for autonomous flight, this prototype robotic lander hovered for nearly half a minute at a height of seven feet before parking itself safely on the ground. Conceived as a joint project between NASA, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation, the intelligent bot is slated to go where its parachuting, aero-braking cousins can't -- like the Moon, or an asteroid. Future tests are on deck for the self-propelled lander to hover up to one hundred feet over the short span of a minute -- no doubt its current feat is pretty neat, but we wouldn't want to be the unsuspecting dolt who walked under it without his infrared goggles on.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Quiet

Quiet for Mac

We've covered apps that help you focus by masking other windows in the background in the past. Quiet is another app that will blank out distractions and help you stick to the task at hand.

You can configure keyboard shortcuts or use the drop-down menu from the menu bar icon to enter and exit Focus mode for a selected app or Space.

You get a choice of "isolation" effect, with Quiet defaulting to Fade to Black. Focus Out is available as well as Wallpaper, which removes everything off screen apart from the window or space you're focused on and reveals the wallpaper behind.

Where the Fade to Black and Wallpaper modes worked fine, the defocus effect caused some temporary disruption to certain apps, which made it frustrating to use. A warning is displayed up to say that "Focus Out demands a powerful Mac" (Intel integrated video not supported), but you don't get much more powerful than a 2011 top-spec MacBook Pro. That's an option to avoid for most, then.

Quiet will "quiet" certain apps or all supported apps at your preference. Apps such as Adium, iChat and Skype can be selectively suppressed along with Mail and the GrowlHelperApp, which blocks all Growl notifications. Quiet will also set your instant messaging status to DND with the default being "I'm in The Zone."

Whereas other apps, such as HazeOver, quickly isolate windows automatically, Quiet is a heavier, totally manual affair. If that's something you're after, then Quiet will do the job for US$3.99 from the Mac App Store. If you're after something similar for a little less money, check out the free Isolator.

Cloud no cure for IT department haters

Go ahead, install Salesforce. Please

It's a seeming truism that everyone hates IT. Indeed, while IT departments have long looked to open source as a way to skirt the formal purchasing and legal processes that slow down software acquisition, marketing and other departments now look to the cloud/SaaS as a way to evade IT for much the same reason.?

Final Cut Express, Server going away as Apple improves Final Cut Pro X

Apple has discontinued the "prosumer" Final Cut Express and its high-end Final Cut Server products in the process of its release of Final Cut Pro X earlier this week. And, to the surprise of no one, the complete restructuring of Apple's direction for its video editing software aimed at professionals has been met with loud criticism. But Apple plans to quickly improve Final Cut Pro X over time, addressing many of the complaints with incremental feature updates.

Many users have expressed their frustration with a litany of missing features in Final Cut Pro X. To begin with, there's no support for output to tape, and input from tape is very limited. There's no support for EDL or XML export, commonly used to move projects from the editing stage to the finishing stage using other software. There's no OMF output for mixing audio using Pro Tools. And because FCPX uses a completely re-architected underlying media handling and editing paradigm, it can't import projects from previous versions of Final Cut Pro.

Caught With A DUI In New Jersey? You Can Now Blame The Bar That Served You

This is from a few weeks back, but techinabox writes in to point out the latest in ridiculously misapplied third party liability. It appears that in New Jersey, if you get good and drunk at a bar, and then hop in your car and get into legal trouble for driving under the influence (DUI), you can blame the bar for serving you... and win. The state supreme court said that it's perfectly reasonable for Fredrick Voss to sue the bar that served him drinks, even though he was the one who drove to the bar on his motorcycle, drank a bunch, and then got back on his motorcycle after drinking, drove off, ran a red light and got into an accident. A lower court still needs to determine if the bar actually is liable, but the supreme court seems to have no issue with holding bars liable in such situations. It's pretty scary that we keep seeing stories concerning attempts to stretch third party liability. Beyond blaming the wrong party, third party liability only serves to take responsibility off the parties actual responsible. It's a bad idea... but one that seems to be getting more and more popular.
